These essays are sorted into three printing groups, depending on which stone lettering is added. Forgeries comprise a fourth group.

The links on the left take you to the printing groups and subgroups (currently B, C and D printing groups are dead links). Each subgroup has pages which provide different ways to interact with the essays:

A closer look

Shows a bigger scan of a single (450dpi) or sheet (225dpi), when the corresponding thumbnail is clicked.

A really close look

Shows a bigger scan of a single (600dpi) or sheet (300dpi), when the corresponding thumbnail is clicked.

Compare side by side

Allows the viewer to choose any two different scans of essay singles, and view them side by side.

Compare top and bottom

Allows the viewer to choose any two different scans of essay singles, and view them one on top of the other.

Sheet remade

Shows a constructed (300dpi) sheet of essays of printing subgroups for which no sheets exist, when the corresponding thumbnail is clicked. These can be printed out (scale is supplied).

Plate features

Shows a table of hi-res (600dpi) scans of relevant plate characteristics for each position.

What we know

Analyses by collectors in an effort to gain more insight into the printings.

Essay scans naming system

  • 1893mf identifier
  • Printing group - background lettering, blue disk lettering or design lettering (bk, blue, des)
  • Position in sheet (a, b, c, d)
  • Single, sheet, single from sheet, single from pair, or constructed as a sheet from known singles (sing, sheet, sfsh, sfpr, shcon)
  • Design, colors, or complete (des, col, comp)
  • Where it is now (first 3 letters of current owner's collection)
  • Size - 60dpi (thumbnail), 225,dpi 300dpi, 450dpi, 600dpi scan (thm, 225, 300, 50, 600)
  • Plate characteristic (frame_blkmk, spike, etc)
  • Stone (bk, des, dsk, rlb)
  • Width (110, 220)

E.g., 1893mf_bk_a_sing_comp_rue_600_frme_blkmk_des_220.jpg

means that the essay is from the "background lettering" printing, position A, a single, complete (i.e. has both design and colors), is in the Ruecker collection, scanned at 600dpi, cropped to show thick or altered frameline plus black mark in design stone, with a width of 220 pixels.

means that the essay is from the "blue disk lettering" printing, position B, a single cropped from a sheet, has colors only, is in the Blinco collection, scanned at 450dpi.

means that the essay is from the "blue disk lettering" printing, a sheet, complete (i.e., has both design and colores), is in the Millet collection, scanned at 60dpi (thumbnail).

All scans are the same size, where possible.

Some have been enlarged beyond their normal resolution (e.g., some from the Treadwell and Millet collections).
